Body Fat Calculator

Estimate body fat percentage from tape measurements with the US Navy method, plus fat mass and lean mass.

Quick answer: The US Navy method estimates body fat from neck, waist and (for women) hip circumference against height. An estimate of 10–20% is typical for men and 18–28% for women; the calculator also returns fat mass and lean body mass in kilograms or pounds.

Tape-based body fat estimates are typically accurate to within about 3–4 percentage points when measured carefully. Measure at the same time of day, keep the tape level and snug without compressing the skin. This is an estimate, not a medical assessment.

What is Body Fat Calculator?

Body fat percentage is the share of your weight that is fat. Unlike BMI it separates fat from muscle, which is why it is the better measure for anyone who trains. The US Navy method estimates it from body circumferences — neck and waist for men; neck, waist and hip for women — combined with height. It was developed to replace underwater weighing in the military and is accurate to within about 3–4 percentage points when measured carefully. The calculator returns your estimated body fat percentage, your category, and the split between fat mass and lean body mass, which is the number to watch if you are trying to change body composition rather than just weight.

Common Uses for Body Fat Calculator

  • Track whether weight change is fat or muscle
  • Set a body-composition goal beyond the scale
  • Compare your estimate against healthy body fat ranges
  • Get a baseline before starting a training programme

Why body fat beats weight

The scale cannot tell whether a kilogram lost was fat or muscle. Tracking body fat percentage and lean mass answers that. A person whose weight is unchanged but whose body fat fell has made real progress that the scale hides.

Measuring consistently

Measure at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before eating, and record each site twice. Consistency of technique matters more than absolute precision — the trend over weeks is the signal, not any single reading.

Lean mass is the number to protect

When losing weight, the goal is to lose fat and keep lean mass. If lean mass drops steeply, the deficit is probably too aggressive or protein too low. The calculator returns lean mass so you can follow it alongside body fat.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the tape method?
Within about 3–4 percentage points when measurements are taken consistently. It is less precise than DEXA or hydrostatic weighing but far cheaper and repeatable at home.
Where exactly do I measure?
Neck just below the larynx; waist at the navel for men and at the narrowest point for women; hip at the widest point. Keep the tape level, snug and not compressing the skin.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Common ranges: men 8–19% fitness, 20–24% average, 25%+ obese; women 21–32% fitness, 33–38% average, 39%+ obese. Athletes sit lower. Essential fat is about 2–5% for men and 10–13% for women.
Why is my tape estimate different from my smart scale?
Smart scales use bioelectrical impedance, which varies with hydration and can swing several points within a day. The tape method is more stable if you measure the same way each time. Neither matches DEXA exactly.
