BMI Calculator for Women

BMI for adult women, with the healthy range and the body-composition context that matters most.

Quick answer: BMI is calculated the same way for women and men, but women carry more essential fat on average. A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is the healthy band for adult women; below about 21, very low body fat can affect menstrual health.

BMI is a screening measure, not a diagnosis. It does not distinguish muscle from fat, and athletes with high muscle mass can read as overweight. Children and teenagers are assessed against age- and sex-specific percentile charts, not these adult bands. Talk to a healthcare professional about your own health.

What is BMI Calculator for Women?

The BMI formula does not contain a sex term, so the number is calculated identically for women. What differs is interpretation. Women carry more essential fat than men — roughly 10–13% versus 2–5% — because of reproductive physiology, and healthy body fat ranges are correspondingly higher. That means a woman and a man with the same BMI can have quite different body composition. This calculator returns the standard BMI and category, and points you to body fat and waist measurements for a more complete picture. Very low body fat in women can disrupt menstrual cycles, which BMI alone will not reveal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMI different for women?
The formula is identical; only the interpretation differs. Women naturally carry more essential fat, so a healthy body fat percentage is higher for women than men at the same BMI.
What BMI is too low for a woman?
Below 18.5 is underweight. For women who menstruate, sustained very low body fat can stop periods even at a normal BMI, so clinical judgement matters more than the number alone.
Should women use a different healthy range?
The WHO 18.5–24.9 range applies to adult women too. Body fat percentage gives the female-specific detail that BMI cannot.
